Is your car ready for a road trip?

As summer beckons, you may be making plans for a road trip. Perhaps it will be cross country or just a few states over.

In any case, doing a few things now can save you major headaches down the road. In fact, measures such as having your brakes checked could make the difference between you being rear-ended or rear-ending someone.

What the essentials are

At a minimum, check your tires, brakes, oil and battery, or have a technician check them. For example, a tire that is low on air may cause your tire to become hotter and waste gas. You could also experience a tire blowout.

If you take your car into a station for a basic checkup, explain that you are going on a road trip and want to ensure the car is in adequate shape. Also, ensure that your tags and driver's license are up to date.

Pack an emergency kit

If you do not already have an emergency kit, it is time now to build one. Items to consider including are:

  • Raincoats
  • Jumper cables
  • First-aid kits
  • Water bottles
  • Road flares
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Rags
  • Maps

Having an emergency kit is even more important if you will travel through areas where cell signals are unreliable. If a drunk driver sideswipes you and you cannot drive your vehicle and call for help, the kit could keep you safe.

Load wisely

Your car may be in great shape, but the load it carries makes a difference. Pack too much, and your car could be in higher danger of turning over or not handling well. If you are traveling with kids, pack snacks and games for them to reduce the possibility of you getting distracted.

It can be stressful to get hit by another car when you are on vacation. Consulting with an attorney may help you understand the options at your disposal.
