Number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes jumped in 2015

Colorado motorists may be alarmed to learn that more large trucks are becoming involved in fatal traffic accidents, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration statistics. The agency reports that the number of large trucks involved in deadly crashes jumped by 8 percent between 2014 and 2015.

The FMCSA report, entitled "Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts 2015", states that there were 3,598 fatal accidents involving 4,050 large trucks and 3,996 truck drivers in 2015. The large truck crash involvement rate was 1.45 per 100 million miles driven, which is also an 8 percent spike from 2014. Of the truck drivers involved, 206 were age 25 or below, and 211 were age 66 or above. The crashes claimed the lives of 667 truck drivers or truck occupants, which was a 2 percent jump from the previous year.

Overall, there were around 415,000 large truck crashes reported to the police in 2015, resulting in 83,000 injuries. Sixty-four percent of those accidents involved two motor vehicles, and 20 percent of fatal crashes involved a large truck and a pedestrian, bicycle or some type of non-motorized vehicle.

Semi truck accidents can be caused by a number of factors, included distracted driving, drunk driving, speeding and improper truck maintenance. Negligent truck drivers and trucking companies are vulnerable to lawsuits by injured victims. For example, with the help of a personal injury lawyer, an injured victim could use police reports, accident investigation results and witness testimony to prove that a truck driver is legally liable for a crash. If the suit is successful, a court may award the victim financial compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other related damages.
