How to stay safe in an era of distracted driving

Colorado residents may have gotten used to seeing drivers using their cellphone while behind the wheel. That doesn't mean that those who don't use their cellphones cannot keep themselves safe on the road. In general terms, defensive driving is the act of predicting how other drivers may act on the road. From there, they may be able to take actions that prevent or reduce the odds of an accident.

There are a few different ways in which people can act in a defensive manner while driving. The first three steps are scan for, predict and identify actual threats. Others are to decide what actions to take and to execute the appropriate response for a given situation. To be a good defensive driver, people must engage in a variety of mental and physical tasks in a short period of time.

It is important to not use a cellphone or otherwise drive while distracted. Those that do will not be able to anticipate the actions of others on the road. As most people know, defensive driving revolves around the idea that other drivers will make mistakes. Therefore, a defensive driver must remain vigilant, which means waiting to respond to a call or text until after reaching a destination.

People who are injured in auto accidents caused by a distracted driver may wish to talk with an attorney. Legal counsel may be able to help them get the compensation that they may be entitled to. The amount of a financial award may be determined either by a jury or through a negotiated settlement.
