Cargo securement to be the focus during annual truck inspection

Drivers of commercial vehicles in Colorado should be prepared for the International Roadcheck event that will take place on June 6-8, 2017. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conducts this inspection blitz once a year, and this one will focus on ensuring that the cargo being transported by commercial vehicles are secure. Checking cargo securement is a normal part of CVSA's Level I inspections, and by focusing on it in this year's inspection, they hope to stress its importance to truck drivers and fleet operators.

CVSA has designed a flyer that provides helpful cargo securement tips for drivers and fleets to consult before the International Roadcheck begins. The organization recommends that truckers carefully inspect the loads being transported and all the associated equipment to double-check that everything is properly secured Tie-downs should also be scrutinized for signs of wear and damage.

The most common violations associated with cargo securement include the presence of loose, damaged or insufficient tie-downs, trucking equipment that is not secured properly and the failure to prevent cargo from shifting or getting lost.

Inspectors will conduct mostly North American Standard Level I inspections during the 72-hour inspection event. These types of examinations are considered to be the most thorough since both the truck and driver are inspected.

Commercial truck accidents caused by cargo that has not been properly secured can cause grave injuries and even death. Victims of such accidents should speak with personal injury attorneys to explore their various legal options. A lawyer may file lawsuits against the parties liable for truck accidents that were caused by traffic violations, truck driver fatigue, falsified trucking logs, improper truck maintenance, distracted driving and more. A financial settlement may be obtained to cover a victim's medical expenses.
