Survey reveals bad driving habits of young people

The results of a survey sponsored by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety could make Colorado parents reluctant to hand the keys to younger drivers. Responses from people 19 to 24 showed that 88 percent of them admitted to engaging in at least one type risky behavior behind the wheel during the previous 30 days.

Drivers in this age group type messages while driving almost twice as often as other age groups. Among young people, 59.3 percent of them reported typing messages while operating a vehicle, but only 31.4 percent of other drivers engaged in the distracting behavior. Close to 50 percent of younger drivers indicated that they had run light red lights recently. The other age groups, however, ran red lights too with 36 percent admitting to it on the survey. Not many drivers exceeded the speed limit in school zones by 10 mph, but younger drivers still did it more often than drivers over age 24.

Recent years have seen a spike in traffic fatalities nationwide. The 35,092 people who died in car crashes in 2015 represented a 7 percent increase over the previous year. Such a sudden one-year rise in deaths had not happened for 50 years.

Motorists who cause automobile accidents because of reckless actions like texting and driving, speeding or driving under the influence could expose themselves to financial liability. People who have been injured in such a crash often need extensive medical treatment, during which they are unable to return to work. They may want to have an attorney's help in seeking compensation for these and other losses.
