Speed-limiting rule may be blocked by Trump administration

Despite the fact that a new commercial truck safety rule was published in August, experts worry that the regulation may be blocked by the incoming Trump administration. The rule would limit the speeds of trucks in Colorado and the rest of the nation to 60, 65 or 68 miles per hour by mandating the use of speed-limiting devices on newer trucks.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, it takes about a year after a rule is published before it can be made effective. The two agencies have to review thousands of comments that were submitted about the new rule before they can move forward.

Safety experts had worked to try to get the new regulation in place before Obama leaves office. Trump has indicated that he intends to roll back numerous regulations that many inhibit economic growth. One of the purposes of the rule is to prevent truck drivers from driving faster than their tires can handle, which is around 75 miles per hour. Some states have speed limits that are set at that speed or higher.

Federal trucking regulations are extensive because commercial trucks weigh so much more than other vehicles. This makes trucking accidents especially dangerous. Personal injury attorneys who regularly represent the injured victims of negligent truck drivers may work to identify all of the legal claims and defendants that should be named in resulting lawsuits. By naming multiple parties as defendants, personal injury lawyers may have more avenues of recovery so that their clients may receive fair compensation.
