Fatality rate up during first 6 months of the 2016

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced in early October that it is working towards zero traffic fatalities in Colorado and the rest of the country within the next 30 years. It followed a disturbing report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the number of fatal traffic accidents during the first six months of 2016.

According to the NHTSA, nearly 18,000 people were killed in accidents from January to June of 2016. This is approximately a 10 percent increase over the same time period of 2015. If it continues, then 2016 could see the largest single-year fatality increase that has occurred since the 1960s. The Federal Highway Administration indicates that some of the increase can be attributed to the fact that more people are traveling on the road. It reported that people traveled 50.1 billion more miles during the first six months of 2016 than they did during the first six months of 2015.

The drive towards zero traffic fatalities may be helped by driverless cars. As many as 94 percent of all traffic accidents are caused by human mistakes. Since driverless cars take away human error, the number of fatalities is expected to substantially decrease.

Motor vehicle collisions may be life-altering for those who are involved in them as well as their families. Injured victims often face the need for lengthy periods of expensive medical care, and in many cases their financial situation is worsened even further by an inability to return to work. If it can be demonstrated that the accident was caused by the negligence of another driver, the victim might want to have a lawyer's help in seeking compensation from the at-fault motorist.
