Fatal car accidents are increasing. Follow these tips to stay safe.

We all know that driving is dangerous, but most of us fail to recognize just how perilous it can be to get behind the wheel of a car. In fact, according to statistics from both the National Safety Council and the Centers for Disease Control, motor vehicle crashes rank among the top five ways to die in this country.

While our vehicles are supposedly safer today, with airbags, better safety restraints, and even safety sensors, the rate of fatal car accidents in the U.S. continues to rise. In the first eight months of 2016, over 19,000 people were killed on U.S. roads and more than two million more seriously injured.

Why are fatal car crashes increasing?

Increased safety features in cars should be keeping us safer, right? For the most part, they are preventing a lot of accidents and saving some drivers and passengers from otherwise certain death. Aside from the safety features, the numbers of fatalities continue to rise for several reasons that include:

  • There are simply more drivers on the road. Our population numbers are increasing, creating an increase in the total number of drivers.
  • Longer commutes and road trips. Existing drivers are reporting driving more miles than in the past.
  • Drivers are distracted. The distraction of touch screen info-systems and Smartphones in motor vehicles has been a leading cause of motor vehicle crashes in recent years.

The rise in car crashes and fatalities is also location-dependant. If you live in certain states, your chances of being involved in one of these crashes are higher. Florida is the highest, where motor vehicle fatalities have gone up 43 percent since 2014. Other dangerous states include Georgia, Indiana, and California.

How to stay safe on the road

Regardless of where you live and the modern safety features on your car, there are some proactive things that you can do to stay safe on the road. Avoid dangerous accidents and possible fatal car crashes with these safety tips:

  • Remain alert at all times. Remember those defensive driving videos from high school? Take them to heart and always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Never drive while distracted. Don't touch your phone, touch screen, or anything else while in the car, even at a stop light.
  • Don't drink and drive. This should be a given, but it's a bad idea to drive with any alcohol in your bloodstream.
  • Obey traffic laws. Don't speed or drive aggressively. These are sure ways to cause an accident and potential lose your life.

With more drivers on the road and death tolls on the rise, your attention to safety is more important than ever. Follow these tips to stay safe on the road, and reduce your chances of being involved in a tragic accident.
