What to bring to a lawyer's office after an accident

As many Coloradans know, auto accidents are unpleasant experiences. Even accidents that don't involve an injury can be traumatic. In some cases, an accident victim will experience a significant loss of time and money as well as ongoing physical and emotional problems.

Because of the real risk of litigation and possible insurance problems, it isn't unusual for people to have to seek out the advice of an attorney immediately after an accident. Unfortunately, the trauma of an accident can sometimes affect a person's judgment when it comes to preparing for a lawyer meeting. Appropriate legal action may be delayed if a client is not prepared with needed documentation.

After scheduling a meeting with an attorney, victims may wish to assemble a portfolio of important documents. These documents can be grouped into roughly three categories. The first is insurance: Clients should bring copies of all insurance documents, which will tell the lawyer what type of recovery options the victim may be entitled to. The second is loss documentation: This includes evidence of time off work, medical bills and receipts for other expenses incurred because of the accident. Finally, clients should also gather information from law enforcement officials and the accident scene. This includes the other party's contact information, photos of the accident, tickets and police reports.

Many car accident victims benefit from speaking with an attorney. Since the effects of some injuries can take time to develop, communication with a lawyer may help victims receive compensation for ongoing medical care and lost wages from a potential long-term disability.
