Survey: Most people know texting while driving is dangerous, but people do it anyway

Is there anyone who doesn't recognize that texting while driving is dangerous? A recent survey by State Farm Insurance revealed that 98 percent of drivers understand the danger associated with texting while driving, but 36 percent of the respondents admitted to engaging in this risky behavior anyway.

Additionally, 86 percent said they know that using social media while behind the wheel is very distracting, but 21 percent said they browse social media and 16 percent said they post to their social media accounts -- all while driving.

It seems that with the increase in smartphone functions has come an increase in distracted driving. Texting and talking on the phone are not the only forms of phone-related distraction that can cause a serious accident. In the State Farm survey, drivers admitted to a variety of dangerous driving behaviors:

  • 29 percent said they access the Internet
  • 23 percent said they check their email
  • 19 percent said they take photos
  • 10 percent said they record video

For a reasonable person, these figures may boggle the mind, but the reality is that many people still put their lives and the lives of others at risk by allowing cell phones to distract from the task of driving.

The reason texting and other smartphone-related behaviors are so dangerous is that they require a driver's manual, visual and cognitive attention. Safe driving requires the use of all three of these faculties.

The reality is that distracted driving is a form of negligence, and far too many people are willing to sacrifice safety for the convenience and distraction of a smartphone. If you have been injured by a distracted driver in the Denver area, then don't hesitate to contact a local personal injury attorney to explain your situation.
