Early 2015 car accident data paints ugly picture

One of the major themes, if not the major theme, of our time is the incredible growth and development of new technology. We continuously improve our computers, our cellphones, our networks and our ability to connect with other people -- and we've barely scratched the surface of our incredible technological advances with those four elements.

We bring this up because it would be easy to presume that with so much technological development and with such great technological advances that car safety has reached a point that car accidents aren't as severe as they once were. In relation to that myth, it would be easy to think that injuries and deaths in car accidents have plummeted in recent years.

Unfortunately, a new report by the National Safety Council shatters this myth and shows us that we still have a long way to go when it comes to road safety -- incredible technological advances or not.

According to the NSC report, the first half of this year has seen a jump in car accident fatalities and injuries. Road accident deaths are up 14 percent, and road accident injuries are up 33 percent. Possibly the most unnerving part about the report is that these increases in deaths and injuries can't be correlated to an equal increase in miles traveled by drivers. Total miles traveled in the first half of the year by drivers has only increased 3.4 percent.

It's a scary reminder that we need to do everything we can to share the road and drive safely. Negligent or irresponsible drivers could be held responsible in criminal and/or civil court.
