Motorcycle accidents more injurious and fatal than other crashes

The scenic roads and highways throughout Colorado are a huge draw for motorcyclists - both locals and tourists. And while some of these roads can be dangerous in and of themselves, most seasoned riders know how to traverse them safely. The far greater danger that motorcyclists face is one that they have little control over: Drivers of cars and trucks.

No matter where you live, motorcycle riding is far more dangerous than driving. According to the Insurance Information Institute, motorcyclists are about 26 times more likely to die in a crash and five times more likely to suffer injuries, compared to occupants in passenger cars. In 2013 alone, motorcycle crashes killed 4,668 people and injured another 88,000 on U.S. roads and highways.

Some of the dangers that motorcyclists face come with the territory, so to speak. These vehicles are smaller than cars and trucks and offer no external protection in the event of a crash. Moreover, many riders choose not to wear helmets, despite the fact that they greatly reduce the chances of death and brain injuries.

That being said, other motorists are also responsible for the high death and injury rates among motorcyclists. Too often, other drivers fail to pay attention to motorcyclists in their vicinity or do not give them due deference. This means they follow too closely, turn in front of oncoming motorcycles and pass riders without completely moving into the next lane.

When accidents occur, motorcyclists who survive are often left with severe and/or permanent injuries. Unless they seek legal help, they may be unable to pay medical bills and other expenses such as lost work time.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a motorcycle accident caused by a negligent driver, please remember that insurance companies and at-fault drivers may be trying to settle quickly, but not necessarily in your best interests. In order to better understand your rights and options, please contact an experienced personal injury attorney.
